Primal Rage: Hollywood’s Eight Foot Black Sheep

This year’s Oscar winner for Best Picture, CODA, is another example of how Hollywood has focused on increasing diversity, inclusion, and acceptance. But today’s movie review of Primal Rage (2018) focuses on the other end of the spectrum: that of shame and exclusion.

The movie’s main star is a Sasquatch, otherwise known as a Bigfoot. Having been a victim of discrimination, ridicule, and foot shaming for decades, the Sasquatch is akin to the proverbial red-headed stepchild of cinema. Often dismissed in the same manner as elves, the Loch Ness Monster, and leprechauns, Sasquatches have gained worldwide recognition among cryptozoologist and layman alike. This is why a film such as Primal Rage is so important, as it helps make the case for Bigfoot acceptance overall and future Oscar consideration in particular.

Consider this: Over the years, the Academy has recognized films based on everything from dogs to dragons, whales to dinosaurs, and even aliens. ALIENS! In fact, as fate would have it, MovieSlap happened to cross paths with former NFL offensive lineman hopeful, Olof Pilar, who had also just seen Primal Rage. When asked for his thoughts, he stated:

I’d say it was more like a documentary than a feature film. Trust me, I know a thing or two about getting overlooked and ignored. But COME ON! Not too long ago you had a fake story about some fornicating lizard-fish-man thing [ed: The Shape of Water] win best picture But yet we’ve known the Bigfeet are real since, like, the 60’s, and you’re telling me they can’t even get a sniff of recognition? It’s like Buffalo Bills training camp all over again, man!

Clearly Mr. Pillar has some strong opinions on the matter, and here at MovieSlap, we understand.

I’m sorry this has been less of a movie review and more of a soapbox rant, but it comes from the heart, and, in my opinion, is something that needed to be said. So please, whether it’s Primal Rage, The Abominable Snowman, or even Harry and the Hendersons, support your local Bigfoot community.
