The Worst Movie I’ve Seen Might Be Deep Water

There are far too many bad movies out there to count, but what’s the worst movie ever? To me, the really bad ones are those you never expect to be as bad as they are. They’re the ones that start with a solid cast, decent production budget, and intriguing trailers. That being said, I think “Deep Water” may be the worst movie I’ve ever seen.

Personally, I feel Ben Affleck’s talent behind the camera surpasses that of his acting. He doesn’t really exhibit a lot of range and tends to need a strong supporting cast around him to thrive in a given role. I can’t really say he’s much of a draw for me on an individual basis, but over the years he’s generally chosen projects that Ive enjoyed.

So what the hell happened here?!?

The first ten minutes of Deep Water are interesting enough. Some mild intrigue captures the viewer’s attention as Affleck is joined by the beautiful and talented Ana de Armas, who plays his on-screen wife. Those first ten minutes soon give way to a bit of confusion, however. Confusion, meaning questions I began asking myself after realizing I was nearly an hour in, and still watching. It was as though the writers pulled random plot devices out of a hat – infidelity, jealousy, “cuckery”, to name a few – and haphazardly tried to make them the focus, in lieu of character development and a coherent, engaging story. There are, no doubt, those who would find it entertaining to watch two of the beautiful people repeatedly asking each other, “You want to **** him/her…don’t you!”, but I just cannot count myself among them. 

Another question I began asking myself was whether the director had some sort of weird foot/shoe fetish. And quite frankly, it was at that moment when I realized I was way off  into the weeds and well past the point where this movie was deserving of even one more minute of my time.
