Movie Review: The Last Duel (2021)

Director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Alien) is in his mid-80s, but still putting out some amazing work. The Last Duel is no exception. 

Set in medieval France, the story is based on the actual conflict between Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques le Gris (Adam Driver). The two friends are rocked by an accusation of rape, made by De Carrouges’ wife and directed at Le Gris. The narrative is structured in three parts, each from the perspective of the three individuals who are caught up in the accusation. This structure itself is my only real criticism of an otherwise excellent film, as there just was not enough differentiation among the perspectives to make it worthwhile, or to justify the added running time needed in order to accommodate it. 

This film is light years ahead of my candidate for worst movie ever, Deep Water. Ben Affleck, although not the star of this film, has redeemed himself in my eyes.

Structure aside, you have a stellar cast putting out inspired performances, and as with past Ridley Scott films, The Last Duel has the authentic feel of a true epic.
